Romantic Maid No Sure Thing for The Roses 2016

May 17th, 2016

Trainer Roger James has been pleased with the form and class displayed by Romantic Maid through her short racing career, but is unsure the filly will get a run in the talent-rich Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Romantic Maid has made only five competitive appearances at the races since first appearing on in February, but has stamped herself as one to watch in claiming two wins and a minor; unlucky to lose her rider in one other start.

Having run third the More Than Ready BM75 (1900m) at Rosehill in what was her first Australian start on May 7th, Romantic Maid currently sits at position 21 in 2016 The Roses nominations, in a race limited to only sixteen positions plus emergencies.

Underlining the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) as the hopeful target for the High Chaparral filly, James told AAP he was pleased with her first-up performance in Australia and is hopeful she will get a run in The Roses 2016.

“I was satisfied, but I thought she might have done better,” James said.

“Michael Rodd felt she was very much in need of blinkers.

“We haven’t had that feedback before, but it might be as a result of what happened when she clipped heels at Ellerslie.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to her competitive debut, Romantic Maid delivered a notable field a near-four length defeat in the All Gold Cosmo Club Maiden (1400m) on February 24th.

Repeating the dose in the Fairview Motors BM65 (1600m) on March 19th, Romantic Maid ran fourth behind stable mate and Queensland Derby prospect The Hassler in the Schlaeper Shearing BM75 (1600m) on April 10th.

So-far unproven at black type level, Romantic Maid dropped her rider during the running of the Group 2 Valachi Downs Championship Stakes (2100m) in her only other start prior to the More Than Ready BM75, on April 23rd.

The 2016 The Roses final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
