2016 The Roses Field and Barrier Draw

May 18th, 2016

A talented and capacity field of sixteen three-year-old fillies plus emergencies has been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben; the final point of call on the traditional path towards the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) in a fortnight.

Ambience carries excellent form into The Roses 2016 and should prove very hard to beat in the race after drawing the ideal barrier 4 and being confirmed to be partnered by leading Godolphin hoop James McDonald.

Capping a strong 2015 campaign third in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), Ambience clearly needed a run when eighth in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) first-up but responded with a competitive performance for fifth in the Group 3 Arrowfield Classic (1600m).

Luckless when blocked for a run in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on March 26th, the Street Cry filly has not been seen at the races since charging home for a close second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) on April 9th.

Look To The Stars carries winning form into the 2016 Doomben Roses and will leave from barrier 5, with regular hoop Blake Spriggs in the saddle.

Look To The Stars has displayed a clear affiliation with Queensland racing; winning the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) and running third in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) during the 2015 edition of the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Failing to fire in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) first-up on March 19th, the I Am Invincible filly progressed to eighth in the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) before taking out the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) on the Sunshine Coast on April 23rd.

Chris Waller will launch a two pronged attack on the fillies’ feature after confirming both Sebring Sally and Chandana in the 2016 The Roses field.

Running second in a Moonee Valley minor over a mile on January 29th, Sebring Sally returned to winning form in the Listed Strutt Stakes (2100m) in Hobart on February 8th.

While failing to make anything of an impact in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2500m), the daughter of Sebring placed fourth in the Café Culture + Insitu BM67 (1550m) before a luckless run in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) a fortnight ago.

Chandana has steadily built to the task this time and appears primed for a return to the winner’s circle in The Roses, having placed a close second in the talent-rich More Than Ready BM75 (1900m) on May 7th.
